What's Holding You Back? The Invisible Limit

What's Holding You Back? The Invisible Limit

Have you ever felt like you're standing on the edge of something amazing but find yourself holding back? Not because you fear failure, but because you fear what happens if you actually succeed? According to psychologist Gay Hendricks, many of us unconsciously limit our potential, keeping ourselves from stepping fully into our Zone of Genius.

How We Self-Sabotage

Hendricks, author of The Big Leap, describes the 'Upper Limit Problem' as the invisible ceiling we impose on our own happiness, success, and personal fulfilment. Whenever we exceed our self-imposed limit—whether in career, relationships, or creativity—we unconsciously pull ourselves back through procrastination, self-doubt, or even creating drama that blocks progress.

Why We Limit Ourselves

The fear of success is deeply ingrained. It’s not just about achieving more; it’s about the pressure, responsibility, and potential changes that success brings. We might wonder:

  • “If I succeed, will my relationships change?”
  • “Can I handle the expectations that come with growth?”
  • “What if I step into my full power and still don’t feel happy?”

Hendricks argues that we’re conditioned to believe we must limit our joy and achievements to stay “safe.” But true fulfilment lies in embracing our 'Zone of Genius'—the unique skills and passions that allow us to thrive.

Zone of Genius

Most people operate in their 'Zone of Competence' (things they do well but don’t love) or 'Zone of Excellence' (things they succeed at but that don’t light them up). The 'Zone of Genius', however, is where natural talent and deep passion intersect. It’s where work feels effortless and fulfilling.

To shift into this zone, you need to identify where you unconsciously hold yourself back and start challenging those limitations.

How to Break Through Your Upper Limit

  • Recognise patterns – Notice where you pull back when things get good. Is fear running the show?
  • Challenge limiting beliefs – Ask yourself, “What would happen if I stopped holding back?”
  • Take small, bold steps – Growth doesn’t have to be drastic. Start saying 'yes' to more opportunities.
  • Surround yourself with high achievers – Learn from those who have already stepped into their Zone of Genius.
  • Celebrate success – Don’t downplay wins. Train yourself to feel comfortable with growth.

The Takeaway

If you think you're holding yourself back, pause and reframe. Life won’t always unfold as planned—circumstances sometimes steer our choices, but by silencing that inner critic and exploring possibility, you can boost your confidence, happiness and refocus on where you wan to be. When you recognise that the biggest obstacle holding you back is you, challenge the doubts, reject the fear, and set your sights high. The only limits are the ones you accept—so don’t.
